Mural celebrates 150 years of The Gap community

A mural depicting 150 years of The Gap was unveiled today at Payne Road State School as part of Queensland’s 150th celebrations.

Member for Ashgrove Kate Jones unveiled the three metre by two metre mural in front of the entire school community and around 90 invited guests.

“Just about every student in the school can say they had a hand in helping artist and teacher Doug Hemming bring the past to life in this wonderful work of art,” Ms Jones said.

“Today it’s my great pleasure to unveil this masterpiece for all to see, as well as the accompanying three artwork panels – one each on Queensland’s three unique environments: Barrier Reef, Beach and Rainforest.

“It’s wonderful that while professional artists were engaged, the students were really into this Q150 community project as well,” she said.

The school received $10,000 in Q150 community funding to create the mural, which depicts the morphing of The Gap landscape from sleepy rural countryside to treed suburbia and business district.

“This year is all about our communities in Queensland such as this celebrating our people, our places and our stories,” Ms Jones said.

“I congratulate the Payne Road State School and everyone involved in bringing this Q150 project to fruition.”

The work of four local artists – Elizabeth Lamont, Annette Thompson, Romy Willing and Sara Garrett-Hodoniczky – were also on display at the school as part of the occasion.

Principal Rob Deen said the unveiling of the mural was a cause of great excitement among staff and students.

“We think it’s great that we’ve been able to share in this way in celebrating Queensland’s 150th birthday year,” he said.
